9 Egg Freezing Myths That Keep Single Women From Starting

Issue #61September 4, 20264 min read

Most of what stops people isn't the needle or the cost — it's a myth they've never said out loud to check if it's actually true. These egg freezing myths show up in almost every consultation I've heard about secondhand and every DM I get. Let's take them apart one at a time.

  1. "You need a partner to justify it." Reality: nothing about egg freezing requires anyone else's timeline, presence, or approval.
  2. "It guarantees a baby." Reality: it preserves possibility, not certainty — a stat worth knowing going in, not something meant to scare you out of trying.
  3. "It's only for career-obsessed women." Reality: people freeze for a hundred reasons — timing, health, circumstance, simply not being ready — and none of them require a résumé to justify.
  4. "There's one right age to do it." Reality: earlier generally means better odds, but "right" is whichever age you actually have the information and means to act.
  5. "It's basically like getting your period, no big deal." Reality: it's a real medical process with real hormones, real appointments, and real recovery time — worth respecting, not minimizing.
  6. "Insurance never covers any of it." Reality: coverage is limited but growing — employer benefits and state mandates for medically necessary cases expand a little more every year.
  7. "You only get one shot at this." Reality: most people do more than one cycle. Planning for that from the start removes a lot of unnecessary panic mid-process.
  8. "It's too late once you're past 35." Reality: odds shift, they don't vanish. Plenty of people freeze successfully in their late 30s and early 40s.
  9. "People will judge you for doing this alone." Reality: the people whose opinions actually matter are usually relieved you're taking care of yourself, not judging you for it.
